Will be getting the keys to my new condo next month and was thinking of doing some basic renovation. Can anyone recommend a contractor that you've had a good experience (honest, good, fast - in that particular order of importance), can suggest some simple ID (no need to spoon feed when it comes to technical stuff) with and doesn't overcharge? Better still if they accept installments :)

Work to be done
1. Plaster ceiling
2. Floor tiling
3. Living/Dining cabinets and mirror wall
4. TV cabinet (floating kind)
5. Lighting and electrical

Also is anyone familiar with smoked mirrors? those that look slightly brownish. are they a lot more expensive compared to normal mirrors?

Thanks for any help :)

Hiya, I thought that I might share in this same discussions too.

I am looking for contractors/workmen for some work.. I think probably around july august 2010 after getting the keys. But at the moment I am looking around and looking for some quotes.

1. I need a ducting system (aircond) installed for the lounge/kitchen, plus airconds for all the rooms in the house.

2. I will be shipping some kitchen cabinets to Malaysia, so needed somebody/ies to install the cabinets, hoods, cooker and some integrated appliances etc.

3. I need some wallpapers to be hung too.

4. some electricals/lightings..

I am so bad at any DIY.. so any help would be greatly appreciated toothy10

I was at first thinking of employing an interior designer. But then, there is where the fun part is.. Plus.. a designer would be expensive isnt it? I have already got some ideas what to put in each rooms, plus Ive bought some pieces of furnitures and wallpapers,.. so I thought, I just need some workmen. But then I wouldnt be there to see innit?

Hmm... I have got a Malaysian friend who is currently residing in the UK, she was an architect in Malaysia, designing for her clients. She told me that cabinets (they are flat packed for ease of transport, so no worries about transit damage) are much cheaper in the UK or Germany, have higher qualities an better design. And talking about Italian leather sofa, they are too expensive in Malaysia.

Now,.. Im not sure how true all of this is. To ship a container will cost me around about £400 or so (about RM2000), Im not sure if its worth it.

Thank you for your reply :)

now that I know you are brit, I will be more gentle in my posting toothy10

labour cost in malaysia not expensive...even for interior designer.
they have good contacts for specialists....save you hefta time, so that you can concentrate on making money elsewhere.....to pay for his services.

As long as you dun go for those award wining firm, Goh+RA and etc...you won;t burn a hole in your pocket.

I see what you want to do. You want your own idea, your own kitchen, furnitures and etc....you just need to make clear to the designer what you have in mind.....they are mostly professional. I am using one now. Really, save you heap of hassle, even if you were to pay a bit of premium.

Trust me, you dun want to deal with electricians, kitchen maker, airconds installer, wet work workers and etc. You just want to deal with ONE person.

Of course, you can appoint a contractor....but contractor usually doesn't have good taste, and have no innovative idea. Most importantly they rarely know the latest design, concept and trend.

I am with you. If you want a nice home with class concept and design, you can't be calculating til the cow comes home. Beauty is not without pain.

Get from UK/Germant. You pay thru yr nose here for similar products. same with designer furnitures. You get much better bargain in UK. Honestly, if I have money, I won;t be doing any shopping in KL. It's a terrible experience. :p You can't even get a descent beverage chiller even in the upmarket shopping area.

Personal effect, no tax (provided you can prove that you are relocating).
Brand new furnitures...in a bundle, yes will subject to excise duty. salute

Thank you Fernando, yup, I will have to weigh between the benefits and risks associated with shipping. You are absolutely right.. it will be too risky, especially if we got the measurements wrong, or needed some parts missing, or even miscommunication between the maker and installer.

Thanks again Fernando :)
